Review for Oren Meshi
I had never heard of Oren Meshi until I tried the branch at the Marina in Ashkelon. I am very pleased with their bakery products, in particular the dairy pastries. The prices are fair and they are delicious. I highly recommend the small chocolate pastries and the dairy cinnamon rolls. The pareve goods are fair, but nothing different from any other bakery in Israel.
They have a wide selection of more unique baked goods (mini pizzas, pain au chocolate, interesting croissants, garlic bread). I tried the garlic bread and the zatar focaccia. The Zatar focaccia was excellent, but slightly pricy (15 ILS), with fresh roasted garlic. The garlic bread was slightly underwhelming. It looked delicious and was affordable (3 for 10 ILS), but not garlicy enough for me and the texture of the bread was a bit dry.
The baguettes are excellent and an excellent value (6 for 12 ILS). This morning when I arrived about 11:00, they are just out of the oven and really delicious.
I tried the matbucha salad, and it was good. Not quite as good as the salads you would get at Machane Yehuda, but better than a regular store bought spread. I look forward to trying more salads in the future.
The sandwiches look delicious, and considering how good their bread it, I am confident they will be excellent. The bread and pastries here seem fresher than Roladin, but that might be because it’s new.
I ordered a café Americano, and was happy with the strength (not too watered down) and the price (12 ILS for a large), but be careful, because the barista almost added milk! All in all, I am excited that this café is around. My main complaint about the marina was that the café ‘s are all non-kosher, so this is a great addition for me. I plan to try working there one day. They have a pleasant and spacious outdoor eating area.
